So why was I so panicked? Am I really so attached to a phone?

Yes, I am. But it is not this phone in particular. I am addicted to communicating. I grew up an only child so I spent a lot of my early years on my own. Personality-wise I am shy and I am slow to make friends, so I have spent a lot of my young adult life on my own. A few years ago an wonderful thing happened. Through the internet I met this amazing group of people called the Browncoats. And when I say I met this people, I mean inreal life. I have gotten to know them and trust them. They have become part of my family. I know people rail against the isolating nature of the internet, but the internet helped me find a family and stay connected to them. This is a relationship that transcends the digital communication, these are real live people that encourage me to get out of my house and experience the world. I could go on for hours, days even, about the Browncoats, but this post is about my attachment to my cell phone.

I don’t just use my phone for voice messages. I text and I twitter. I carry on business and I have lengthy conversations on the phone, but I can also find people in crowded loud places with text messages. While my dad cannot understand the value of texting, I love that I can get quick little updates from people. They often make me smile in the middle of an otherwise mundane day. It also makes me feel connected to people even though I am in a place that might otherwise feel lonely. And when you live alone and work in an office with very few other people there is a lot of value to just knowing your friends are out there.

The drama, for now, has been resolved. My cell phone was hidden under a big blanket, which is why I had a hard time hearing it ring last night. I was able to make plans to meet people for an outdoor show today. I was even able to tell them, by text, exactly where we were sitting in the park. I value that communication, especially when it leads to sharing a picnic with people I enjoy.
